Concepts of Time

Today my fingers fumbled over cupcake liners
Just yesterday it was diapers.
Today I turned in your kindergarten registration
Just yesterday you were discharged from the hospital.
Today I combed your hair
Just yesterday I stroked your bare head.
Today I said, "one more day bugga boo!"
Just yesterday I said, "hello my sweet."
Tomorrow you will turn five,
and someday it will seem like just yesterday.

  1. My bugga boo turns 9 on Friday...I feel your pain, Mama. It just happens way too fast!

  2. I love this structure. It is so true it was just yesterday they were so little, now today they are grown up, married, and turning 30. How did this happen?

  3. Oh, it's another goodbye poem which I adore. As Elsie said, the structure is lovely, & of course bittersweet is the content. How do they grow so quickly? Happy birthday to your 'baby'!

  4. I love writing poems for people's birthdays. Even more special, it was one for your daughter. Congratulations, Mom! Happy "birth-giving" day to you!

    P.S. I also liked the structure :)

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Love, Love, Love this! What an exciting time! Don't you want "bugga boo" to be small again, but yet excited for what is to come? I have felt this way at each stage of my children's lives.

  6. What a beautiful poem! I really liked the juxtaposition of events - registration for kindergarten, discharge from hospital... How fast time flies.
